What do small hinges mean that open doors?

Let in furniture fittings

When building sophisticated furniture that not only has a high practical value, but is also intended to become a piece of jewelery for the home, fittings are usually embedded. That happens once aesthetic reasons, on the other hand, it also challenges them technology.

If they are not seated tightly and neatly in their recesses, functional problems arise. If they are not set deep enough, there will be too much space between the body and door, precisely dimensioned components will not fit, and a door gap that is too wide will spoil the overall picture. If the recess of the hinge tab is carved too deeply out of the wood, the door or flap will spring back and there is a risk that the fastening screws will tear out of the material.

Corrections are possible in both cases, but with a lot of rework connected. If the depth of the recesses is too small, the Fittings dismantled again, and wood is removed in the appropriate thickness. The wood is peeled off in thin shavings like with a plane.

Fittings right let in

First the Positions of the fittings precisely defined. Then it is marked. The fitting itself is used as a template. The length and width of the recess are shortened Pencil marks marked. With the help of a stop angle, extend the markings as clear pencil lines.

The width of a fitting and also the material thickness, i.e. the depth of the recess, can be marked with a mark. Mark several times and as deeply as possible. Then the wood to be excavated is cut across the grain at short intervals.

If the wood thickness and hinge width are identical - half of the tape roll should protrude - you can saw through with a precision saw. If the wood is thicker than half the hinge width, it is only sawn to the width of the crack and then re-engraved with the chisel.

Then carefully work out the wood with the chisel. In the case of detachable straps, the narrower part of the flap lies in the surface, here only the chisel is used. Finally, the chisel is used for cleaning in the direction of the grain. This prevents the wood from splitting open in the direction of the split.

Important: Careful handling and an absolutely sharp tool are a prerequisite for all work with the chisel. To be on the safe side, the cutting edge of the tool should be freshly removed beforehand.

The holes for the fastening screws are marked and pre-drilled in half the screw strength. The screws are easier to screw in if the thread is coated with wax beforehand. It looks better with the screws aligned. This means that the screw slots point in one direction. Rod hinges (piano hinge) are rebated.

The best drills on the do-it-yourself market - an overview:

Hinges ricattach carefully

Hinges ensure that doors and flaps on furniture can be opened and closed smoothly. The cheapest option is piano hinges (rod hinges), which have to be screwed over the entire length. They are therefore unsuitable for frequent dismantling. In furniture that is easy to assemble, such as the cupboards in fitted kitchens, cup hinge hinges are often used, which usually fit into the pre-drilled hole pattern.

You can also let the corresponding holes for these hinges in a door or flap yourself. The easiest way to do this is with a Forstner bit. In order to work exactly perpendicular to the workpiece, the drill should be clamped in a drill stand.

Defective furnitureblows are quickly repaired

No problem: Drill out torn screw holes and repair them with glued-in wooden dowels, transverse wooden dowels or wooden disks. Small holes can be filled with matches or toothpicks. Brush with glue and cut flush. Bottom parts for concealed hinge are also available with screw holes on the side for better hold.

If the door is crooked, the hinge can be lowered or raised with a veneer strip. Rod hinges can be turned around. Then the holes are in other positions. If the door hangs or jams: the hinge hinge can be adjusted with the adjusting screws.

Let in fittings: Various possibilities

In addition to the technical function modern fittings also offer something for the eye.

Is the wood wider than the hinge tab, is torn and sawed in to the crack. Then cut off the wood.

With very narrow lobes cannot be sawed in. Mark, cut through the wood with the chisel and clear it out.

For embedding pot hinges only one hole (35 or 26 mm Ø) is necessary. Corresponding drills are available to buy.

With veneered furniture panels the sharp edges of a Forstner bit cut perfectly clean edges without tearing.

Bar hinges are embedded with the help of a milling cutter. This is best done before assembling the furniture.

Seat and length of the hinge are marked with short pencil lines and precisely recorded with the help of an angle.

The inlet depth with the mark on the material and transfer it to the wood by marking it several times.

With a fine saw the wood is sawn in at short intervals exactly to the depth of the torn mark.

After removal of the sawn-in material, the recess is smoothed with a chisel that is as wide as possible.

Unevenness becomes visibleif you blacken the angle with a pencil and slide it over the material several times.

For pre-drilling and screwing the hinge flush with the edge, you can fix a notice board with clamps.

For marking of the second hinge flap provisionally mount the hinge and transfer the position.
