How can I lubricate a pneumatic cylinder

How a lock cylinder should be looked after

What should be used, spray, graphite or oil?

The industry provides special care products for the care of locking cylinders. These do not resinify and do not stick.

Under no circumstances should ordinary oil (motor oil, cooking oil) be used. Because such lubricants are not suitable for door cylinders. After a short time, they would make the pins and springs stiff.

Graphite or care spray?

As a rule, new lock cylinders are only lubricated with special liquid care products. Before maintenance, the information provided by the cylinder manufacturer should be observed so that the guarantee is not lost!

If a cylinder has been sprayed with graphite beforehand, liquid lubricant should not be used, otherwise graphite and spray can combine to form a pulpy consistency. Or a blackish liquid flows out of the cylinder, which quickly messes up your pants and shirt. Graphite is a powder and is only suitable as a dry lubricant. - In the past, graphite was often used. And because old cylinders and round cylinders are still in use, it must be assumed that graphite was sprayed on. Such a cylinder can be cleaned. When all of the graphite is removed, spray can be used. This cleaning should be carried out by a specialist. Because the cylinder has to be completely dismantled.

How much and how often?

There is no benefit in soaking a cylinder. A short spray of about one second is enough. A spray tube should be used so that the spray arrives in the cylinder and not half of it bypasses the outside. There is no fixed rule for the frequency. But it should be every 6 months. Correspondingly more often for heavily used cylinders.

- If a locking cylinder is not maintained, rapid and high wear is to be expected and can lead to total failure in a short time.

Those who still use graphite should note that excessive use can even lead to clogging. When graphite is sprayed in, some of the powder always penetrates into the main lock and combines with the lock grease. In the long run, adhesions and lumps can form and make cleaning necessary.

What to do if you are not sure whether graphite has already been used? Contact a professional. He can quickly determine which measure is suitable.

The cylinder does not work properly despite the spray

When inserting the key, noises are generated which are caused by the pins and locking elements being pushed away and springing back. You can also feel a gentle jump. This is normal and not a malfunction. If the key is fully inserted and jams when turning, the cylinder is very likely worn out or the key is defective. This has to be fixed as soon as possible.

The types of sprays

Large cylinder manufacturers recommend using their own sprays for their cylinders. I don't want to contradict that here. Anyone who uses a very high-quality and expensive cylinder, or even a locking system, should absolutely observe the manufacturer's information because of the guarantee. If the cylinder manufacturer does not specifically stipulate that only his spray may be used, then another spray with the same effect can be used. Whether a spray is suitable for cylinders is written on the bottle. If such information is missing, it is best to avoid the product. If you use an unknown or unsuitable spray, you risk malfunction. Good sprays are available for a few euros. If you only use it for your lock cylinder, you can get by with a small bottle for many years.
