Masego

Masego is an American jazz and neo-soul musician who was born Micah Davis in Kingston, Jamaica in 1993. Masego sings and plays the saxophone, drums and keyboards. He released his debut EP in 2016 with “Loose Thoughts”.

Masego plays a mixture of fusion jazz, soul, R&B and funk, which he himself describes as "TrapHouseJazz". He invokes the classical varieties of these musical styles and gives them a contemporary look through a modern production. As the son of two pastors, Micah Davis came into contact with church music as a child - a fact that he regards as crucial for his later musical career. He names the gospel musician and pastor John P. Kee as important influences, but also the rapper, singer and hip-hop producer André 3000 from OutKast and the legendary jazz singer and dancer Cab Calloway. The video for “Tadow”, Masego's collaboration with the French house producer FKJ, was viewed almost 150 million times worldwide.

With “Lady Lady” Masego released his first studio album in 2018, which was followed by an extensive world tour. At the end of 2019 the artist was a feature guest on the single "Flight 99" by Please Wait and on the album "Bubba" by Kaytranada.

Masego in the ByteFM program:

Masego (ticket raffle)

Masego In music you sometimes have to name things, whether you like them or not. That can be simple (case study: "Rock") or a little more difficult, as in the case of Masego, for example. The music produced by the Jamaican-American saxophonist, pianist and singer is what he himself describes as "TrapHouseJazz". // Since these songs are much more than just the sum of their eclectic individual parts, Masego fortunately has another name for his music: "Emotion". So he hits it a lot better: Instead of being squeezed into predetermined drawers, Masego does his own thing on the 14 tracks of his recently released debut "Lady Lady". // What gives his songs life is his singing, which is as soulful as it is versatile: Sometimes he speaks with the self-confidence of a young Q-Tip, the next moment he gives goose bumps with the falsetto of a Prince. ByteFM presents Masego's tour and is giving away 2 × 2 guest list places per concert among all members of the “Friends of ByteFM” association.

Transpacific soul music: Please Wait feat. Masego

Masego, the Please Wait vocally amplified Transpacific soul music gets to be heard who joins "Flight 99". Please Wait may not literally have to go on a plane. But the sound files have to come across the Pacific Ocean somehow if the Australian beatmaker Ta-ku and the Canadian producer Matt McWaters work together as a duo. // Since they both feel more comfortable behind the mixer than in front of the microphone, they brought someone else on board for a track on their debut EP: Masego. For the US-American, who often appears sympathetic, standing in front of the microphone seems to have become second nature.

Uncompromising relaxation: Masego with "Veg Out (Wasting Thyme)"

Read full blog post / Abstract:
Masego Uncompromising relaxation is Masego's ardent desire. The Jamaican-born singer, rapper and saxophonist sings about vegetables in his new song "Veg Out (Wasting Thyme)", as the word "veg" might suggest. // With his current musical output, he is granted the break. In the past six months, Masego has not only been involved in a ByteFM track of the day (as a singer on Please Waits “Flight 99”). // And even when he demands uncompromising relaxation, in which he even hands over the responsibility for the design of the sofa-vegetable existence, Masego doesn’t let go. Instead, he turns it into a song. Well, if he can't get out of his workaholic skin, we'll be happy to relieve him of the relaxation.

Kaytranada - "Bubba" (review)

Read full blog post / Abstract:
“What You Need” is nothing more than the standard model in the club kit. “Need It” tries the experiment in the wrong place, namely with Masego as a very hard-working Schmacht rapper. The threateningly twitching bass and the cleverly arranged high tones do not comfort you.

FKJ - "Risk" (feat. Bas)

Read full blog post / Abstract:
Vincent Fenton aka FKJ “Risk” is a relaxed, jazzy track for which the French producer and pianist Vincent Fenton aka FKJ invited a guest rapper with Bas. Feature guests are nothing unusual at FKJ. For him, artists like Masego or Tom Misch have already stood in the singing booth. Fenton himself prefers to work on the tonal structure that brings out the vocals.
