More information about LTO tape

The regular backup of important data is an essential task in every company these days. If the IT infrastructure fails unexpectedly, the reconstruction of secured databases is usually the only way to quickly get operations back on track.
The industry has therefore developed many different technologies for data protection over the course of time, of which the LTO specification ("Linear Tape Open") with the Ultrium media has become more and more established in the professional environment in recent years. Since the Ultrium standards are not the work of a single manufacturer, but are supported by more than 30 IT groups with high standing, the availability of the corresponding tape drives and media as well as the associated software is also ensured in the long term.

The Ultrium specifications are designed for maximum flexibility

  • Ultrium media are backward compatible. In the drives of a new standard, the tapes of the last two generations can be read as well as written.
  • In addition to rewritable tapes, WORM tapes ("write once read multiple") are also available, which can only be written to once. This technology is only implemented starting with third generation Ultrium drives.
  • As of the fourth Ultrium generation, the data files written to the tape can be encrypted regardless of the manufacturer. The secure AES algorithm with a 256-bit long key is usually used.
  • The drives are available in full (8.9 cm, 3.5 inch) and half height (4.45 cm, 1.75 inch) and are suitable for rack installation.
  • During the construction, special emphasis was placed on the possibility of being able to use Ultrium tapes in the automated data backup process. Ultrium tapes are flattened on one side so that they can be used with fully automatic robots without any problems and thus offer the necessary tolerance to facilitate the reliable insertion of the tapes into the drive with the aid of the robot arm.
  • The log files of the last 100 tape mounts can be viewed due to a memory chip in the tape cassette that also logs the backup processes. As a result, problems are recognized early and obsolete belts can be replaced in good time.
  • The current fourth Ultrium generation (as of April 2010) has uncompressed capacities of 800 gigabytes per tape.

Recommendations for use for Ultrium tapes

Please note that Ultrium tape cartridges also contain a mechanically moving tape, which is subject to normal wear and tear. You should therefore not use the tapes for years to avoid data loss due to wear and tear.

Ultrium tapes usually have a specified maximum operating temperature of 45 ° C. The storage temperature is significantly lower. Therefore tapes - regardless of whether they are new or already written on - should never be exposed to direct sunlight or the effects of heat, otherwise there is a risk of malfunctions and data loss!

Don't be blinded by storage capacities far beyond the terabyte limit! All tape manufacturers as well as drive manufacturers give two values for the storage capacities of their Ultrium drives as well as the tapes: The first - lower - value denotes the capacity with uncompressed storage of the data, the second - usually twice as high - gives the value maximum capacity for compressed data. As a rule, however, this high capacity cannot be achieved, since by far not every data format can be compressed by a factor of two. If a lot of multimedia data is to be backed up, a maximum factor of 1: 1.3 can be achieved, depending on the compression method used. Binary files cannot be reduced in size any further. Pure text files, however, can ideally be compressed by a factor of two. You should therefore always assume the lower capacities as the starting value when purchasing new Ultrium tapes.

Please note that the time required to save compressed data increases. In the case of time-controlled backups in robot mode, this can mean that a full backup takes several hours longer, depending on the amount of data.

Since Ultrium tapes are usually specified for a storage period of a maximum of 30 years, they are also suitable for archiving purposes prescribed by law. The tapes used for this should, however, be stored very carefully and thermally balanced in a safe place.
