How to Find 50 Backlink Opportunities in Just 20 Minutes

Even if you're not an SEO expert, you surely know how important backlinks are.

They are the backbone and foundation of any SEO strategy.

You can take my word for it. There are hundreds of backlink opportunities just looking to be found by you.

You don't have to be a superhero to track down these opportunities, either. You don't even need any special knowledge. You just need to have a little bit of time.

The whole thing looks like this: There are a lot of websites that definitely give you a link want.

The problem? There are very few high quality sites that are worth linking to.

I speak from experience. I get countless inquiries every week, but most of the pages do not meet my quality requirements.

I love to give backlinks. But I don't just give them away to anyone who asks. The site has to be exceptional to deserve a link.

And that is exactly your responsibility.

If you work tirelessly to create an authoritative site, you will get backlinks too. As simple as that.

You are surely asking yourself now: "Where can I find these links?

I've written a lot of articles on this topic, but sometimes you need the CliffsNotes.

That's why I'm going to show you now how you can find no fewer than 50 backlink opportunities in just 20 minutes or less.

These strategies are really super handy and very effective for building links.

Find the authoritarian pages of your industry (5 minutes)

“Authority” is such a catchphrase, and yet it is very powerful.

If you want to be successful and get a lot of traffic, you have to try to get linked from the major websites in your industry.

That's why you should look out for authoritarian sites first and foremost.

Most link strategies lack ambition.

Most people pretend they landed an interview with a star when they get a link from an authoritative site. You would never have dreamed that.

But I have good news for you: it's not a dream.

A website is not necessarily reluctant to link to smaller websites just because it is so well known. This is not so rare.

You don't have to have thousands of readers to get a link. All you have to do is provide great content.

So you should make a list of the authoritarian sites in your industry.

I like to use Ubersuggest for this. That's how it's done:

Step # 1: Enter a keyword from your industry and click on "Search".

Step # 2: Click on “Content Ideas”.

Step # 3: Analyze the results.

Make a list of websites in your industry that have high domain authority. You can find this website in the column “Page Title & URL”. You will also receive the following data for each page:

  • The estimated traffic that came to the page via the keyword.
  • The number of backlinks pointing to the URL.
  • The number of social shares on Facebook and Pinterest.

In this way you can easily find over 50 websites with high domain authority from your industry. You only need five minutes to create a list and fill it with data.

Check the existing links (5 minutes)

The best way to get a link is to check the existing links on this page.

If your content fits the website, then the chances are good that you will also get a link.

But if your content has nothing to do with the site, you'd better look elsewhere.

Finding outbound links and then checking them can give you a good idea of ​​what the website is trying to do.

There is no generally applicable procedure for this. Personally, I look at at least 5 articles and check the backlinks.

Don't just take a cursory look at the websites. You have to analyze the pages and find out what content they offer.

Some sites may not provide outbound links at all. There is only one link to be found in this post from Copyblogger:

And this SaaStr article has no link at all:

It will be extremely difficult to get a backlink on such websites.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that's the way it is. Not every page is a good way to build backlinks.

But for every page that has very few links, there are five more pages that are backlink hotspots.

So now let's look at a site that has a lot of outbound links. Take a look at this post from Backlinko:

The article has different types of backlinks.

We find the link to a HubSpot post that inspired Brian:

We found the link to a study on click rates:

And we find a link to the Google Search Console:

There are only two other links, both of which refer to contributions from Backlinko.

Now you have to do some thinking. Brian's article is over 1,500 words.

It contains three outbound links.

So we can conclude that Brian only refers to extremely relevant and data-rich sources.

If you look at a few more articles from Brain (e.g. this one and this one), this assumption can be confirmed.

He particularly likes to refer to studies.

But what does that mean for you now? Your content must exactly fit the topic Brian covers in the respective post.

If you've published a legitimate study, you will most likely get the backlink when you ask for it. (More on the subject of requests in a moment.)

That's why you have to check the links.

I use the Ubersuggest program for the link audit, because here I can check and analyze the outbound links of any website.

Enter your URL in the search box.

Since we want to find out what kind of links the website gets, we now click on the menu item “Backlinks”.

Then scroll down to the list of backlinks.

Take a look at the results and find out if Your own Contents are similar to the contents on this list. If so, you've found a new backlink option.

You should plan about 5 minutes for this task.

Check for Broken Links (3 minutes)

You probably already know this strategy. There's a good reason for that too: It works.

As the old saying goes: "You shouldn't fix what isn't broken."

This technique is one of my favorite strategies for collecting links.

Websites are always very grateful if you draw your attention to broken links that no longer work. And in most cases, they'll be happy to give you a link to return the favor.

You will be surprised how well this strategy works, especially if you haven't tried it yet. Notifying a website of a broken link and offering your own link in exchange can be extremely effective.

Brian Dean calls it the Moving Man Method. Call it what you want, it's one of the most popular link building strategies among SEO consultants.

Find influencers in your industry (3 minutes)

This step is similar to finding authoritative websites, but it is different in some ways.

You will often be more successful if you get in direct contact with influencers.

You can go about this in two ways. I will introduce you to two methods. In order not to exceed our limit of 20 minutes, you should decide on one of the two methods.

Option 1: Use Twitter's suggestions. Twitter is a great networking tool. In fact, I think it's best.

Why? It's easy to follow or share someone on Twitter.

Twitter is very easy to maintain and I have found many more influencers on this network who willingly shared my content than on any other social media platform.

With Twitter you can also easily discover new influencers with the section “You might like”.

This is a surefire way to find new people to connect with. It's also not time consuming at all.

And that's how it works. So you know an influencer from your industry. I'll just use Jay Baer from Convince and Convert as an example.

We visit Jay's Twitter profile and check out the “You Might Like” section on the right:

All of these people are associated with Jay or in similar niches.

The suggestions are often very accurate. Twitter uses an algorithm that takes various factors into account to give you these recommendations:

The suggestions are thoughnot always true, but in 80% of the cases extreme relevant.

Find the Twitter profiles of influencers in your niche and write down each individual's name.

Did you find a company? They are good too.

But wait a minute - it gets better.

Do you see the “Update” link in the top right corner?

Here's how you can find even more suggestions:

You can click that link over and over without seeing a lot of repetitions.

You can record all suggestions in your table.

You could find all 50 backlink opportunities with this technique alone!

I like to use different methods, but if it works for you then don't let it stop you.

You can write down 5-10 suggestions per influencer and then move on to the next Twitter profile. This way you get a good selection of different people and companies.

I highly recommend this strategy, but you should always follow the approach that works best for you.

If you're just starting out with finding new backlink opportunities, I highly recommend Twitter. It's easier and more direct than the other two options I'm about to introduce to you.

Option 2: use LinkedIn suggestions.

LinkedIn is often dismissed as boring, but it comes in handy.

You can network very well with influencers on LinkedIn.

Visit your LinkedIn homepage and look to the right. There is a small box there.

This is very similar to the box from Twitter. It shows influencers from your industry.

If you are primarily connected to people who work in marketing, you will see marketing suggestions here.

LinkedIn's algorithm is a bit more general than Twitter's. You may only see influencers from a single industry.

However, you can work around the problem and use a well-kept LinkedIn secret.

Just click on “Show all recommendations” at the bottom of the box.

Then the influencers are assigned to different categories, for example management or communication. You can sift through tons of pages:

In my opinion, this is much better and more practical than the little box. You can work through your industry and find people and companies that you can then ask for a link.

And if that's not enough, you can click “Show More” for even more suggestions:

You should also record the names of the influencers in your table.

You can collect many names with LinkedIn, but the hits are often not as targeted as those from Twitter. Twitter's suggestions are influenced by current profile. LinkedIn's suggestions are much more general.

If you want dynamic suggestions, you should use Twitter. The “You Might Like” box varies from profile to profile, so the suggestions are usually more accurate.

But if you'd rather find a lot of people and aren't too keen on relevant suggestions, you can use LinkedIn.

Make use of existing backlinks (4 minutes)

I don't know why, but when I read articles about backlinks it's all about finding newer Links.

But if you already have existing links, why not use them?

If a website has already linked to your site, you can definitely get more backlinks from that site.

You can find out which websites have linked to you by doing a link check.

If you're short on time, you can use the Google Search Console.

First, log into the Google Search Console.

Click on “Search Queries” in the sidebar.

Then click on "Links to Your Website".

Now you can see all the backlinks pointing to your site.

Record the pages that link to your website in your table. These are great backlink opportunities.


Finished. With my method, you can find countless backlink opportunities in just 20 minutes.

With a little practice, you can go even faster.

On average, you can easily find 50 options with this strategy every time.

Of course, once you've identified these options, your work is far from over. Now you have to grab these links.

With any link building strategy, however, I often find it hardest to figure out Where these good links can be found. That's why I did the hard work for you.

The tips I've shared with you here are very effective.

This strategy is fully effective when you use it repeat.

If you only look for new links every now and then, you will not get the results you want. You should look for backlink opportunities several times a week.

Of course, if you have more than 20 minutes to spare, that's even better. You should definitely take advantage of that.

But I wanted to show you that you can find great backlink opportunities even if you only have 20 minutes.

How do you find new opportunities for fresh links on your website?
