The rainbow is probably one of the most beautiful natural phenomena to be observed. It forms so beautifully colorful when several weather factors are met. We'll tell you some impressive facts about the light band.
A rainbow is created when the sun shines and it rains at the same time. This is an optical phenomenon and, to the delight of many, occurs relatively frequently.
They come about through the reflection, refraction and scattering of sunlight in interaction with raindrops. If that's not cool!

1. Not all colors of the rainbow are visible
The rainbow encompasses a spectrum of colors that ranges from red (outside) to purple (inside). Depending on the culture, it is believed that it contains between three and nine colors.
In the West it is generally assumed that the rainbow comprises the seven colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, turquoise and purple. However, that is only a fraction of the reality.
A rainbow contains an infinite amount of colors, more precisely the lengths of light waves. Some of them are invisible to the human eye.
Others are too similar to neighboring colors and therefore cannot be differentiated, which explains why our visual organ only recognizes a small number of colors.
2. Two people never see the same rainbow
Even if two people stand next to each other and look at the rainbow, they will never see the same one. Why? Because the raindrops through which the sunlight falls are in constant motion.
In addition, their shape changes, creating a completely new angle of refraction. Depending on the position, the observer can only perceive a tiny part of the reflections.
The appearance of a rainbow is also influenced by the position of the sun and that of the observer. The ability to see, which differs greatly from person to person, should also not be ignored.
3. The sky above the rainbow is darker than below
Few have noticed it so far, although it's actually easy to spot if you look at the rainbow. The sky above the rainbow is generally darker than inside.
This is due to the fact that every drop of water has a spherical shape that spreads the light in a disk shape, since it itself consists of a stack of colored disks.
However, since the last discs contain different diameters, there is no overlap, which is how the colors and the shape of the rainbow come about.
Nonetheless, the panes do overlap and create white areas, which leads to an apparent lightening of the sky. Therefore it appears less dark than above the rainbow.
4. Rainbow at noon are very rare
In order for such a phenomenon to occur, various conditions must be combined: It must rain while the sun is shining. But not only that!
It is necessary that our earth is in a certain place: less than 42 degrees above the horizon. As soon as the sun's rays hit the water droplets at an angle less than or equal to 42 degrees, a rainbow is created.
The lower the sun, the more visible the rainbow is. In contrast, the phenomenon does not arise or is barely visible when the earth is strongly facing the sun.
Hence, it is rare for a rainbow to appear at noon. At this point the sun is too high for all conditions to be met.
5. A rainbow can also appear at night
How is it possible that a rainbow, which needs sunlight to appear, also appears at night? The answer: when the full moon takes the place of the sun.
The emitted light can, like sun rays, graze raindrops or damp spots and thus create a similar colorful spectrum.
This phenomenon is called moon rainbow (English: "Moonbow") and it appears in nature a little paler than the usual rainbow. Magical, right?
Its colors are the same as those of an ordinary rainbow, however, due to the lack of light, the receptors of the human eye cannot adequately detect them.
Therefore, the phenomenon appears white more often at night. Furthermore, the night sky has to be as clear as possible so that you can even see a moon rainbow.
6. It is impossible to reach the end
You can try to change your position or angle, or ask another person in the distance, it is impossible to reach the end or the foot of a rainbow.
For the simple reason that the color rays that lead to the phenomenon depend on the distance and angle to the ground of the observer.
As you move, the rainbow moves with you and changes for all of your neighbors no matter how far away they are. But there are still legends that there is treasure at the end of the rainbow.
7. The arch can turn into a circle
A rainbow is a circle that forms around a specific point called the antisolar point. This is the point that is exactly opposite the sun and, when the weather is nice, is marked by the shadow that our head forms.
Yet we cannot see the circle because the earth is in the way. The closer the sun is to the horizon, the bigger the rainbow we see. At sunset we see a semicircle.
In contrast, the higher the sun, the smaller the rainbow appears. However, if the observer increases in height and the sun is behind him, he will be able to see more of the circle.
If you look down from an airplane, with a little luck you can discover the entire circle. However, this observation remains very difficult and rare.
8. There are double and triple rainbows
Almost everyone has seen a rainbow at least once in their life, but some are lucky enough to spot a double or triple rainbow.
Under certain circumstances, a rainbow can be accompanied by a second one, which includes the colors in reverse order: red on the outside and purple on the inside.
This is due to the double reflection of the light in the water droplets, but the second rainbow usually appears paler and less bright.
With triple reflection you can even see a third rainbow. This one has the same color sequence as the first one, but is even less visible.
So you can imagine how incredibly lucky the observer is when he sees a triple or even quadruple rainbow.
9. You can make a rainbow in the garden yourself
Our sky is far from the only place where a rainbow can form. As soon as sun rays hit drops of water, it is possible to replicate the phenomenon.
You may also have accidentally created a rainbow when watering your garden. All you have to do is face the sun with your back and a garden hose in hand.
Then you create a fine drizzle with the hose, and you have your own rainbow. A rainbow can also appear in water fountains or waterfalls.
10. You can make a rainbow disappear
This is possible by using your glasses. In fact, according to a blog by the Discover magazines make a rainbow disappear from your eyes even though it is still there.
To do this, it is sufficient to hold the glasses vertically. This type of glass was designed to block polarized light, that is, light that reflects on horizontal surfaces and is normally blinding.
Due to the blocking, only light that contains information can penetrate the glasses. This should contribute to an improved view. The light that creates rainbows bounces back from the water droplets and is also polarized.
As long as you hold the glasses horizontally, the light will not be filtered. However, if you rotate them, the glasses block the rays and so make the phenomenon disappear. Just amazing, isn't it?
