Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy

Peter Altmaier (CDU) has been head of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy since March 14, 2018. Before that he was Federal Minister for Special Tasks and headed the Federal Chancellery. In addition, the trained lawyer and former Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety took over provisional management of the Federal Ministry of Finance from October 2017 to March 2018.

His overriding goal as Federal Minister of Economics is to make the social market economy “weatherproof” for the challenges of the 21st century, so that the economy continues to develop dynamically and prosperity reaches everyone. For him, it is crucial that companies - even in times of crisis - have reliable, investment and innovation-friendly conditions and that people have security. In the spirit of Ludwig Erhard, he relies on a more market economy and less bureaucracy. A strong, resilient medium-sized company and more business start-ups - from bakery to start-up - are important goals of his work. To this end, the Minister wants to strengthen Germany as a technology and export nation and promote the digitization of industry and medium-sized companies. The economic development of the new federal states and the equalization of living conditions in East and West are particularly important to him.

The aim of his energy policy work is to make the energy transition a driver for modernization, innovation and digitization in the energy sector without endangering the international competitiveness of Germany as an industrial location. To ensure that the expansion of renewable energies continues to be successful, he advocates, among other things, accelerating the expansion of the transmission networks and pays special attention to ensuring that the energy supply remains affordable and secure.
