How do you transport succulents

Sending / shipping flowers and plants safely - tips

Flower lovers and hobby botanists like to exchange their breeding successes and surplus plants with others. Flowers are often sent for a birthday or an anniversary. To ensure that everything arrives safely at the recipient, strong outer packaging is necessary in any case. In addition, the plants, with the exception of cacti and succulents, need sufficient moisture to be transported over several days. Garden and household offer a wide range of packaging materials.

The right timing

Whether the transport will be a success depends on the plant itself, the weather and the parcel service. Plants are preferably sent during breaks in vegetation. If indoor plants have just faded and outdoor plants are not growing, then is the right time. The absence of light, air and sun for a few days is well tolerated at this stage. In winter, during the frosty period, you should not send plants if possible. Even in midsummer, when it is very hot, the mail route can develop into a problem due to a lack of water. Maxi letters are the fastest within Germany. They are often there the next day. Parcels and packages are on the move between one and three working days. Sending books or goods, on the other hand, can take one to two weeks and is not recommended for plants and flowers.

Tip: Inquire about shipping times from private senders as an alternative!

Which packaging is suitable for transport?

Large plants are packaged differently than cuttings, orchids or aquatic plants. For some, a plastic bag filled with water is enough, others need a sturdy box and plenty of insulation material. A sturdy outer box is important so that the

Plant is not damaged during transport. Cuttings and shoots are sent in plastic bags. The lower ends are wrapped with a moistened Zewa kitchen towel and the bag is then tightly closed. The moisture is locked in and keeps the shoot fresh for several days. The air-padded envelope or an empty toilet roll serves as protection.

Send potted plants

To keep the soil in the pot, put the pot in a sufficiently large waterproof plastic bag, such as a sufficiently large garbage bag. The plastic bag is sealed over the plant substrate with a rubber.

Tip: If the plant is sent without a pot, then wrap the bag around the root ball and close it at the top!

To keep the soil moist, the plant should be watered before packing. Excess water should be able to drain off before packing. Now look for a sufficiently large and very sturdy box in which the plant fits. Wrap ornamental foliage plants in a sheet of paper so that the individual leaves do not stick out from the plant. The leaves are spread out upwards as they are wrapped. By the way: If you are unsure about packing, you can watch the plants being packed in a florist beforehand!

The wrapped plant is now placed in the box. Open spaces are filled with crumpled up newspaper or styrofoam packaging flakes. Now seal your package. Shake it gently to see if the contents are still wobbling back and forth. If that is the case, you need to pad the interior better. Even if you have a note on the package about the

Attach the content, the parcel will by no means be treated lovingly in the mail, but tossed back and forth!

What else is suitable as packaging?

Plastic egg containers are suitable for small plants. They offer a lot of protection in the lower area and in the upper area. Empty containers of curd or ice cream are great for shipping plants. Lots of damp kitchen paper and a waterproof plastic bag complete the equipment. Aquatic plants are sealed with water in bags. A film sealing device is a good choice for this. A sturdy packaging for postage is a plastic soda or cola bottle that has not been used for its intended purpose.

Send orchids

Orchids are particularly easy to send because they can withstand longer drying times. The plant pot is wrapped in foil so that the plant substrate does not fall out. You need a sturdy cardboard box of the appropriate size, the interior of which you pad well around the orchid. So that sensitive shoots do not break off, they can also be supported with a rod during transport.

Which parcel service is the fastest?

DHL is one of the fastest parcel services. Allow a day or two for shipping. At Hermes it takes up to four days, although the parcel service is cheaper than DHL. The same shipping times apply to DPD. Extremely large potted plants are sent by freight forwarder.

Send garden plants

  1. Dig up the plant first.
  2. Remove soil from the root ball.
  3. Wrap the root ball in moistened kitchen paper and then in a plastic bag.
  4. Look for stable packaging.
  5. Put the plant in and seal it watertight.
  6. Send as a parcel or parcel, depending on the size.

Tip: Empty and cleaned tetra packs are stable and waterproof packaging. After the plant has been placed in the box, they are sealed with adhesive tape.

A flat box that can be opened to the side is suitable for larger perennials. Due to the small space, any young shoots do not break off. Even with perennials, the root ball is packed moist and waterproof in a plastic bag.

Send cacti and succulents

Cacti and succulents are often quite small. That is why they can be packed in egg cartons and sent as a parcel. With cacti it is important that the space

is well filled around the prickly body. Styrofoam is a suitable filling material so that the spines do not injure themselves or even break off. It is spread around the cactus before packing. You can literally poke the pending cactus spikes into the styrofoam pieces. The substrate will hold in the pot if you wrap the plant pot in a plastic bag or in newspaper. Alternatively, you can pot larger cacti and wrap them in several layers of newspaper.

Send flowers and flowering plants?

The effort to send flowers privately is not worth it. The flower mail order business offers colorful bouquets for shipping for just a few euros. Potted plants should not be sent while they are in bloom. The shocks could cause the flowers to fall off.

Tip: Send flowering plants before or after flowering!
