Screen time for kids - how to use it properly [& benefit from it]

Screen time is that new unit of measure that our parents and grandparents don't understand. If you are still struggling to find the right size for your children, then this article is just right for you. In addition to practical tips for implementation, you will find out how you can make the most of your kids' screen time for yourself.

Children love screens, but how much is right?

How long were you allowed to watch TV as a child?

Children love everything that has a screen. If it were up to them, they would play around with it for hours and forget about everything else around them.

As Rule of thumb I think the following times are suitable:

Preschoolers: 30 minutes a day

Primary school children: 60–90 minutes a day

As I said, these times are not set in stone or any maximum standards. As parents, you should think about how much screen time you want your child to have. For us, for example, it fluctuates during the week. At the weekend, the time in front of the screen is sometimes longer.

How to determine the net screen time

In order to use the screen time sensibly for you, it is important to determine beforehand how much of this time you can really use. These Net screen time is really time that you can freely distribute throughout the day.

  • Important banking matters - there are things that I have to focus on. These are things like when I take care of our bank matters or do the tax return. Here I use the screen time to work on something for 30–60 minutes without any disruption
  • Cleaning, cooking, mowing the lawn - When doing some work in and around the household, it can be dangerous if you are interrupted (e.g. if you have a pan with hot fat on the stove), but at least extremely annoying. The miracle weapon screen time can also be used here

broadcasts on TV are not as flexible as you might think, but if the timing is right, I think these TV programs are good (many of them are also available on iTunes, for example).

Streaming playlist if nothing suitable is playing on TV or you are not a fan of it because of all the advertising on TV, you can take advantage of the new streaming services.

Making technology child-proof

Our children spend most of their screen time in front of the iPad. If that is the case with you too, you can think about how you can protect your expensive technology. The hardware is one thing, the software and apps on your iPad are another.

Our parents may not have faced the challenge of teaching children media literacy with all the different devices, but they also did not have the opportunity to benefit from it themselves.
