Tor Browser for Android

Tor Browser for Android is the only official mobile browser supported and developed by the Tor Project. It's like the Tor Browser for your computer, only for your mobile device with Android. Some of the key features of the Tor Browser for Android are: reducing tracking across websites, defending against surveillance, resisting browser fingerprinting, and bypassing censorship.

Download and install

There is Tor Browser for Android and Tor Browser for Android (alpha). Less tech-savvy users should use Tor Browser for Android as it is less prone to errors. Tor Browser for Android is available on the Play Store, F-Droid, and the Tor Project website. Downloading Tor Browser outside of these three platforms is very risky.

Google play

The Tor Browser for Android can be installed from the Google Play Store.

F-droid

The Guardian project makes Tor Browser for Android available in its F-Droid repository. If you prefer to install the F-Droid app, please follow these steps:

  1. Install the F-Droid app on your Android device from the F-Droid website.

  2. After installing F-Droid, open the app.

  3. Open "Settings" in the lower right corner.

  4. Under the "My Apps" section, open Repositories.

  5. Turn "Guardian Project Official Releases" on.

  6. Now F-Droid will download the list of applications from the Guardian project repository (note: this may take a few minutes).

  7. Tap the back button in the top left corner.

  8. Open "Latest" in the lower left corner.

  9. Open the search screen by tapping the magnifying glass at the bottom right.

  10. Search for "Tor Browser for Android".

  11. Open the query result of "The Tor Project" and install it.

The Tor Project website

You can also get the Tor Browser for Android by downloading and installing the apk file from the Tor Project website.

FIRST START OF TOR BROWSER FOR ANDROID

When you start Tor Browser for the first time, you'll see the option to connect directly to the Tor network or to configure Tor Browser for your connection using the settings icon.

Connect

In most cases you can use "Connect" to connect to the Tor network without any further configuration. Tapping it once, alternating sentences appear at the bottom of the screen that show the progress of the connection between Tor. If you have a relatively fast connection, but this text seems to get stuck in a certain place, you can find help solving the problem on the Troubleshooting page.

Configure

If you know your connection is censored, you should choose the Settings icon. The Tor Browser guides you through a number of configuration options. The first screen informs you about the status of the Tor network and allows you to configure a bridge ("Configure Bridge"). If you know your connection is being censored, or you've tried unsuccessfully to connect to the Tor network and no other solutions have worked, tap Configure Bridge. You will then be directed to the Bypass screen to configure an interchangeable transmission type.

Bypass

Bridge relays are Tor relays that are not listed in the Tor public directory. Bridges are useful for people in oppressive states and for anyone who wants an extra layer of security because someone might find they are communicating with the publicly known IP address of a Tor node.

To use an interchangeable broadcast, tap the settings icon when you start Tor Browser for the first time. The first screen tells you the status of the Tor network. Tap 'Configure Bridge' to configure a bridge.

The next screen offers the option to use either a built-in or a custom bridge. With the option "Use a bridge" you have two options: "obfs4" and "meek-azure".

If you choose the "Provide a bridge that I know" option, you will need to enter a bridge address.

MANAGE IDENTITIES

New identity

If the Tor Browser is running, you'll see this in your phone's notification window along with the "NEW IDENTITY" button. Tapping this button will give you a new identity. Unlike in the Tor Browser for desktop, the "NEW IDENTITY" button in the Tor Browser for Android does not prevent your subsequent browser activity from being linked to what you have previously done. If you choose it, only your Tor channel will be changed.

SECURITY SETTINGS

Security settings disable certain web functions that can be used to compromise your security and anonymity. Tor Browser for Android offers the same three levels of security that are available on the desktop. You can change the security level by following the steps given:

  • Tap the button with 3 vertical dots in the URL bar.
  • Scroll down and tap on "Security Settings".
  • You can now select an option, e.g. B. Standard, Safer, or Most Safest.

UPDATE

The Tor Browser must always be kept up to date. If you continue to use an outdated version of the browser, your privacy and anonymity could be compromised by serious security holes. You can update your Tor Browser automatically or manually.

Automatic update of the Tor Browser for Android

This method assumes that you have either Google Play or F-Droid installed on your mobile device.

Google play

Tap the hamburger menu next to the search bar and go to My Apps & Games> Updates. If you find Tor Browser in the list of apps that need updating, select it and tap the "Update" button.

F-droid

Tap on "Settings" then go to "Manage Installed Apps". On the next screen, select Tor Browser and finally tap the "Refresh" button.

Manually update Tor Browser for Android

Visit the Tor Project website and download a copy of the latest version of the Tor Browser, then install it as before. In most cases, this latest version of Tor Browser will be installed over the older version, which will update the browser. If the browser fails to update, you may need to uninstall Tor Browser before reinstalling it. If Tor Browser is closed, remove it from your system by using your device's settings to uninstall it. Depending on the brand of your mobile device, navigate to Settings> Apps, then select Tor Browser and tap the "Uninstall" button. Then download and install the latest version of Tor Browser.

UNINSTALL

Tor Browser for Android can be uninstalled directly from F-Droid, Google Play or via the app settings on your mobile device.

Google play

Tap the hamburger menu next to the search bar and go to My Apps & Games> Installed. Select Tor Browser from the list of installed applications, then press the "Uninstall" button.

F-droid

Tap on "Settings" then go to "Manage Installed Apps". On the next screen, select Tor Browser and finally tap the "Uninstall" button.

Learn more about Tor on mobile devices

Orfox

Orfox was first released in 2015 by The Guardian Project with the aim of giving Android users a way to browse the web through Tor. Over the next three years, Orfox continued to improve and became a popular way for people to browse the Internet with more privacy than standard browsers. Orfox was necessary for people to bypass the censorship and access blocked pages and important resources. In 2019, Orfox was discontinued after the official Tor Browser for Android was released.

Orbot

Orbot is a free proxy app that allows other applications to use the Tor network. Orbot uses Tor to encrypt your internet traffic. Then you can use it with other apps installed on your mobile device to bypass censorship and protect yourself from surveillance. Orbot can be downloaded and installed from Google Play. Visit our support portal to see if you need Tor Browser for Android and Orbot together or just one.

Tor Browser for iOS

The Tor Browser for iOS does not exist. We recommend the open source iOS application Onion Browser for Tor by someone who works closely with the Tor Project. However, Apple requires iOS browsers to use Webkit, which means that Onion Browser cannot provide the same level of privacy as Tor Browser.

Tor Browser for Windows Phone

There is currently no supported method of running Tor on older Windows phones, but in the case of the newer Microsoft branded / promoted phones, the same steps can be followed on Tor Browser for Android.
