Since its inception, Google has set itself the goal of being the most sought-after search engine on the web. One way, usually with one increasing curiosity from web professionals who will do whatever it takes to understand what makes Google tick.
Former Google quality analyst Pedro Dias explains that Difference between Google's algorithms, manual actions, quality and penalties.
What are search engine algorithms?
Expressed in layman's terms Algorithms like recipes - a series of instructions, in a specific order, aimed at completing a specific task or solving a problem.
These are quality algorithms that are often not part of the infrastructure. There are also Infrastructure algorithms, the z. B. Make decisions about how content is crawled and stored. Most search engines turn to Quality algorithms only at the moment the search results are output. This means that the results are only assessed qualitatively when they are delivered.
However, quality is subjective. All algorithms and documentation that Google uses for its webmaster guidelines are based on real user feedback and data. When users perform searches and interact with websites in the Google index, Google analyzes the behavior of its users. This ensures that the guidelines that Google issues for websites are in line with the wishes of Google users.
Two perspectives of the Google algorithm
To understand and maximize the potential of a website, we should look at our websites from two different perspectives. The first is that “Service” perspective, the second the “Product” perspective.
When looking at a website from a service perspective, we should analyze all the technical aspects involved, from the code to the infrastructure. Fall under typical SEO tasks of UX such as accessibility, usability and findability.
But all the technical bells and whistles alone create no value where and when there is no value. When looking at a website from a product perspective, we should aim to understand the experiences, what value we offer to differentiate ourselves from the competition. Qualitative (rather strategic) aspectshow usefulness, desirability, and credibility are just as crucial.
The Google algorithm is added manually
Humans can infer context and intent, while machines are not that good at that. When an algorithm finds something or overlooks something it shouldn't, it is often referred to in software engineering as “False positive” or “false negative” results. Within Search Quality, there are teams of people who evaluate results and look at websites to make sure the algorithms are working correctly.
Manual actions can be triggered for a variety of reasons. However, the most common aim to to counteract manipulative intentions, because for some reason it was possible to successfully exploit a weak point in the quality algorithms. The punishment for manipulative behavior is called Google Penalties.
As Google relies more and more on algorithmic solutions, using artificial intelligence and machine learning to both improve results and fight spam, will manual measures tend to decrease and eventually disappear completely in the long run.
