The Jackson family

Michael Jackson was born 63 years ago, on August 29, 1958, in the USA. He lived in a working-class neighborhood with his parents and five brothers and three sisters. His father Joseph Jackson had very ambitious plans for the future of his children: he wanted to turn them into successful musicians at an early age.

"Jackson Five"

Even as a young boy, Michael stood on stage with his brothers. They called themselves "Jackson Five" and were the first colored group to be musically successful worldwide. One of their first singles "I Want You Back" from 1969 became an instant number 1 hit. However, the success did not make the brothers happy. Michael Jackson later said he had a very sad childhood and described his father as brutal.

The solo career

At the age of 13, Michael broke away from his father and began his solo career. The single "Ben / You Can Cry On My Shoulder" became Jackson's first number 1 hit as a solo artist. In the 1970s and 1980s he celebrated one musical success after another. His music, his dance style and his show changed the music business forever. In total, over 10 of his songs made it to number one on the US charts. He was the first dark-skinned artist to be endorsed by the music broadcaster MTV. With his worldwide success he became a role model for many colored Americans. He was the proof that you can have great success even as a colored person.

Downside of success

Fame and success also left their mark on the so-called "King of Pop". Over the years he changed his appearance more and more through operations, he withdrew more and more from the public and led a lonely life on his “Neverland Ranch” in California. In recent years the musician has not been able to build on his earlier successes. Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 50. Fans all over the world mourned the world-famous pop star.
